Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics Introduces Anthelios Sunscreen
New to the U.S., this sunscreen blocks out UVA and UVB rays
May 15, 2007
DENVER, CO—A new FDA-approved sunscreen is now available at Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics. This over-the-counter sunscreen called Anthelios SX has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 and includes an active ingredient that’s new to the United States.
Anthelios SX, made by L’Oreal, contains a mix of three active ingredients including ecamsule, never before marketed in the United States. Used in Europe and Canada as Mexoryl SX since 1993, this ingredient prevents sunburn and protects against ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays.
UVB has long been associated with sunburn, while UVA is recognized as a deeper penetrating radiation. Researchers and physicians suspect there is a link between UVA exposure and longer-term effects, including wrinkles, basal and squamous cell cancers and melanoma.
Ecamsule is better at blocking ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation than other sunscreen ingredients currently sold in the United States. Those ingredients mainly screen out UVB rays.
The new sunscreen's two other active ingredients are avobenzone and octocrylene, products the FDA reports are "generally recognized as safe and effective."
Distributed by La Roche-Posay, ANTHELIOS SX with Mexoryl SX SPF 15 is to be used daily. The combination of these three UV active ingredients work in concert to provide continuous protection across the entire UV spectrum (290 - 400 nm range), with high protection in the UVA range.
In 28 studies of Anthelios SX that included more than 2,500 patients, side effects were rare and mild, according to a release by www.webmd.com. The most common side effects in patients were acne, dermatitis, dry skin, eczema, abnormal redness, itching, skin discomfort, and sunburn, according to the FDA.
Anthelios SX is one of several products available for sale at Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics at 250 Steele Street in Cherry Creek North in Denver. Visit www.rockymountainlaser.com or call 303-985-8520.
