Rule 800 could mean revamp of laser clinics in Colorado

Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics not affected because Dr. Raval is Director

October 29, 2007
DENVER, CO—Rule 800, a rule that has been under the microscope since it’s inception is being scrutinized once again. The rule will be debated by the Colorado Board of Medical Examiners in November 2008. If adopted, it will change the face of how most laser clinics are operated—Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics (RMLA) being the exception.

The reason RMLA won’t be affected by the ruling, if adopted, is that Dr. Jeffrey Raval is owner and director of the clinic and is onsite at the clinic regularly.

Rule 800 was conceptualized to monitor physicians monitoring medical treatments in clinics offering such. Rule 800 stipulates appropriate training of medical personnel and ultimate supervision by the directing doctor. Rule 800 requires that the directing doctor oversee patient evaluations and patient treatments from a distance of 30 minutes or less. Dr. Jeffrey Raval meets those standards ubiquitously.

Complaints to the Medical Board precipitated the Medical Board’s review of Rule 800. It seems that some clinics are not adhering to Rule 800 requirements in the context of the prescribed doctor-patient relationship. Most commonly, the physicians under scrutiny have little knowledge of lasers and pulse light devices and are absent when such treatments are rendered.

Jeffrey Raval, MD, FACS, one of the nation’s top facial plastic surgeons listed in the Consumer Registry 2007 and in Castle Connelly 2006, is triple-board certified in cosmetic surgery, head/neck surgery and facial plastic surgery. Voted Best-of-the-Best plastic surgeons by Community Newspapers 2004 and 2006, he owns and is medical director of Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics in Cherry Creek North (Best-of-the-Best Laser Hair Removal 2006 and 2007). Additionally, Dr. Raval co-owns a laser institute operating at Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics where he trains physicians and medical personnel in the use of lasers and injectible fillers. Dr. Raval has achieved Trainer designation with BOTOX, one of two such qualified surgeons in the Denver-Metro area.
