Celebrities weigh in on cosmetic surgery in new book

What Vivian Diller Ph.D. has to say in her newest book “Face It: What Women Really Feel as Their Looks Change” calls into question celebrity Jane Fonda’s rethinking of facial plastic surgery. Diller writes about the conflicted feelings women have toward having cosmetic surgery or avoiding it. She cites famous personalities who may have opposed cosmetic surgery at one time and then gone under the knife.

Diller writes that her female patients claim that they feel better, more capable and more productive at an older age than they did when younger. And yet these same women aren’t comfortable looking their chronological age. Some, like Jane Fonda opt for cosmetic surgery even when she announced years prior that she wouldn’t have yet another surgery. Others like actress Helen Mirren are all for it. Mirren even went so far as to say that she would have thought about cosmetic surgery sooner had she NOT been so much in the public eye.

Interestingly, Dr. Jeffrey Raval sees more patients today foregoing wholesale cosmetic treatments like full facelifts and instead opting for series of smaller, ongoing treatments.

“What we hear from our patients is that they have less time to devote to recovery from larger medical procedures,” says Dr. Jeffrey Raval, medical director and owner of Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics which is located in the same offices as his facial plastic surgery practice, Raval Facial Aesthetics. “Women’s schedules today are booked solid. We often hear our patients exclaim that they’ve never worked harder or longer hours than they have in the last 1 ½ years since the economic downturn. They are busier than ever but don’t want to ignore the signs of aging that happen to all of us. So they’re relying on skin treatments that don’t require any time off.”

Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics offers rejuvenating filler injections that can take years off of one’s looks. Injections along with regular laser treatments to smooth away fine wrinkles and leave the skin texture and color even and baby soft go a long way toward keeping a fresh, youthful look.

Defending BOTOX once more

Once again, news headlines claim that Botox® injections can be lethal. The news reports are not only exaggerated, but inaccurate in that the news stories logged don’t differentiate between injections of BOTOX for medicinal purposes and the injections for cosmetic purposes-a big difference.

“Bottom line, all the reported cases of adverse events using Botox come from injections of BOTOX for medical purposes, not cosmetic,” says Jeff Raval, MD, FACS, American Board certified facial plastic surgeon who is ear/nose/throat board certified too. “The high level of doses of Botox used for medicinal purposes can be too much. For example, there have been cases that doctors injecting Botox in the neck muscle to treat torticollis, abnormal spasms of the neck muscle, have injected too much of the toxin. The patient’s throat can close up and he/she can have trouble breathing.”

But there are no reported incidences of lethal or near-lethal use of Botox for cosmetic treatments, Dr. Raval confirms.

The dangers in Botox use surface in the press every year or so. “There is no truth to the rumor that Botox Cosmetic is dangerous,” adds Dr. Raval.

How does a tattoo-removing laser work?

Whether it was once upon a time or only last year that you thought it was a good idea to have your body stamped with a unicorn, help is available. If it’s because you are making a professional career move or because the person whose name is etched into your neck broke your heart, it does not mater why you need the tattoo removed.  What you need to know is that there is an eraser for all that ink, regardless of the color or intensity. In 10 minutes to 1 hour the laser can significantly lighten and reduce the tattoo by breaking down the ink.  A dramatic difference can be seen after only one treatment and complete removal can be achieved over time.
